By default, messages are public and can only spread showing them privately to supporters. Users can tweet from the web service from official external applications (such as for smartphones ), or by Short Message Service (SMS) available in certain countries. While the service is free, access it via SMS involves support rates fixed by the supplier of mobile telephony .
Twitter started as a research and development within Obvious , LLC, a small start-up of San Francisco in March 2006. The original name of the product wastwttr , inspired by Flickr . At first it was used internally by the developer until he officially launched the public in October of that year. The service rapidly gained adherents, and in March 2007 won the South by Southwest Web Award in the category of blog .

In early 2008, the Twitter team was composed of 18 persons, in 2009, Twitter has increased its staff by four and growing. Although Twitter was used for a short period of time advertising services like AdSense from Google , the company decided to discard the advertising revenue to increase the number of users, and funded in the meantime companies with investments of risk capital . In September 2009, Twitter announced changes to the conditions of service, leaving open the possibility of advertising on their services.
