Carrefour Logo – Carrefour is a multinational chain of distribution of origin French, being the first European and second worldwide in the sector. In 2011, the group has 15,937 stores in 33 countries (19 countries participating) 8302 stores in Europe (except France) 5494 stores in France, 5023 stores in Spain, 1385 stores in Latin America and 756 in Asia. The employs more than 471,000 people worldwide. Consolidated revenues reached 101 018 million euros in 2010.
The largest Carrefour hypermarket was built in 1972, is located in Portet sur Garonne (Toulouse) of 24,400 m2, is the largest in France. The hypermarket was opened number one thousand in China in 2006. It focuses on three markets: Europe, Asia and Latin America. 56% of their business occurs outside of France, but between France and Spain accumulate 79% of total turnover. The group focuses on high-growth markets: China, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Poland and Turkey.
It was at a workshop of Bernardo Trujillo in the United States, where Marcel Fournier and Denis Defforey inspiration came to them. The Carrefour company was created in the Haute Savoie in 1959 by families and Defforey Fournier. In 1963, Carrefour invented the concept of hypermarket, opening the first in the Isle of France in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois. The company was established in Belgium in 1969, in Spain in 1973 and Brazil in 1975. Promodis society (future Promodès) was established in 1961 following the merger of the companies of two families wholesalers Norman led by Paul-Auguste Halley and Leonor Duval Lemonnier-. The name of Carrefour means “crossroads / Crossroads”, as the first hypermarket was precisely located at a crossroads.
In 2008 was launched in China a campaign to boycott French products and Carrefour shopping centers, to protest the reported chaos in Paris during the Olympic torch relay. Under the leadership of new CEO, Lars Olofsson, the company is focusing on changing the retailer’s reputation by focusing on low prices, as consumers regard the chain as too expensive. Carrefour group currently ranked No. 1 in European distribution and 2 of the world.
