Then came a milestone in the history of New Balance: Eleanor and Paul designed and produced the “Trackster”, the world’s first running shoe with wave-like sole, which was produced in different sizes. The “Trackster” became the shoe of choice of running and fitness trainers. The marketing was initially almost exclusively from local sporting goods or Mundpropoganda fairs. That changed, however, as the current Chairman Jim Davis bought up the company in 1972, exactly on the day of the Boston Marathon . At that time, New Balance consisted of six people who produced 30 pairs of shoes a day. A year later, Davis met with the Running Press, to inform them about New Balance, 1978 Jim’s wife Anna joined the company on. In the 1970s came the next big change: The Boston area has become a veritable breeding ground running boom, which spread in the 1970s through the entire United States. Jim and Anna expanded the product line, sales skyrocketed. Davis also initiated a network of independent sales representatives in the U.S. and overseas, thus began the international sales.
Today New Balance employs more than 4,000 employees. The products are sold in 120 countries on all continents. The company has subsidiaries in Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, South Africa
