Wigan Athletic History:

The Wigan Athletic was founded in 1932 after he disappeared from the previous club in town, the Wigan Borough. The foundation of Wigan Athletic was the fifth attempt to establish a team in the city after the disappearance of Wigan County, Wigan Town, Town AFC, and the aforementioned Wigan Borough. The stadium Springfield Park, former home of Wigan Borough, was purchased by the sum of £ 2,850 and the team was chosen to participate in the Cheshire League.

In the early history of Wigan <g class="gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="31" data-gr-id="31">atheletic</g>, his greatest joys came in the FA Cup. In the FA Cup in 1934-35, defeated Wigan Athletic 6-1 to Carlisle United in the first round, setting the record for the biggest victory of an amateur team to a professional team, a record not broken until today. In 1945 Wigan Athletic was chosen to play in another league, the Lancashire Combination, and in 1950 came close to being elected to participate in the Football League, but lost against Scunthorpe United by nine votes. In the FA Cup in 1953-54, Wigan played a game against Hereford United in front of 27,526 spectators, a record attendance in a game of two amateur teams in the amateur stage, and also a record for Wigan.

In the 1970s the Wigan Athletic was a founding member of the Northern Premier League. After failing 34 times their choice to play in the Football League, and even a controversial failed attempt to participate in the Scottish Second Division in 1972, Wigan was chosen to participate in the Football League as champion of the Northern Premier League in 1978, instead of Southport FC, who finished last in the Football League Fourth Division last season.
