Applebee’s International, Inc. in the U.S. that develops franchises and operates the restaurant chain Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar. It is the largest chain of “restaurants step” in their country of origin, had 1,804 restaurants across the United States, Guatemala, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Ecuador and elsewhere around the world since 2005. The headquarters are located in Overland Park, Kansas. Their motto is Eatin ‘Good In The Neighborhood.
The Applebee’s chain was started by Gavin and Jada Hill, who opened his first restaurant in 1980, TJ Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs, in Atlanta, Georgia. After opening his second restaurant the pair sold their company to WR Grace and Company in 1983. As part of the transaction, Andy Schafer was named president of a branch of Applebee’s, an indirect subsidiary of WR Grace and Company.
In that role, Schafer guided the operation from its beginnings to a business-fledged franchise. He became a dealer of Applebee’s in 1985 and today has more than three dozen restaurants. For each of the past 13 years (1993-2005), Applebee’s has opened 100 or more new branches. The company estimates at least 3,000 restaurants, the development potential of the Applebee’s concept in America.
