On May 14th of 1997 , five airlines from three continents – United Airlines , Lufthansa , Air Canada , Thai Airways International and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) – joined to create the first airline alliance , Star Alliance . The next day, on May 15th of 1997 , the new alliance hired the advertising agency Young & Rubicam Advertising to publicize the consortium of airlines, for that spent a total 25 million U.S. dollars .
